PÉTALE

What is a facial serum? What makes it different from a moisturizer? Do I need one? How do I use it? When do I use it?

If you’re at all into skincare, you’ve probably asked yourself at least one of these questions before. And I get it. I’ve been there, and serums are confusing.

Serums are lightweight skincare formulas that deliver nutrients deep into the skin. Compared to traditional moisturizers, serums are made up of smaller, lighter-weight molecules (often gel or water-based), which allows them to really penetrate the skin. Because of this, the concentration and effect of the active ingredients is much stronger, so serums are excellent for targeting specific skincare concerns. Serum is considered treatment rather than moisturizer, and can be thought of as the “superfood” for the skin.

Dermatologists say that a good serum contains antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, and hydrators–these three ingredients work together to keep the skin healthy. Antioxidants help protect against sun damage, and fight the free radicals that are responsible for all the visible signs of aging on your skin. Anti-inflammatories fight skin redness and cell damage. And hydrators protect against dryness and wrinkles by strengthening the skin’s barrier and cell membranes.

Essentique’s new Petale serum has all three of these things, in organic, plant-based forms.

Orchid Absolute’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties slow the process of aging on your skin by increasing cell regeneration. It also helps regulate skin pigmentation, retrieving and maintaining natural skin color. Orchids also contain minerals that keep skin young, clean, bright, and soft; reducing fine lines and wrinkles, moisturizing, soothing, and conditioning the skin.

Chia Seed Organic Carrier Oil has the perfect ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 Essential Fatty Acids.  It is also a rich source of antioxidants and phytonutrients, which protect the skin from environmental elements and help reduce the appearance of aged skin. Chia Seed oil reduces water loss by protecting skin’s moisture barrier, keeping the skin hydrated.

Oat Extract’s anti-inflammatory properties come from ß-Glucans, which reduce sensitivity reactions induced by inflammation (which could be caused by insect bites, irritating substances, or pathogens). Glucans can also increase collagen synthesis, which is helpful for wound repair and cellular renewal.

Ceramides (the ones in Petale are sourced from vegetables) are lipid molecules, and are an important of cell membranes: they provide structural support to cells and improve cellular integrity. When skin lacks sufficient ceramides, its protective barrier is compromised, it becomes susceptible to environmental factors, and it risks becoming dry or irritated. Adding ceramides to the skin strengthens it’s barrier and protects from trans-epidermal water loss, which make them very effective hydrators.

Sacha Oil combats inflammation (anti-inflammatory) and irritation and fights free radical formation (antioxidant), smoothing out wrinkles and lines and restoring suppleness to the skin. It is gentle for sensitive skin, nourishing for sun-damaged skin, and hydrating for all skin types.

In addition to antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, and hydrators, Petale has several other active ingredients that make this serum absolutely lovely.

Orchid Milk, made by pressing orchid petals to extract the liquid, contains a mixture of carbohydrates and proteins that offer intense moisturizing benefits to the skin.

Acmella Oleracea extract, considered a natural alternative to Botox, reduces muscle tension, and therefore the appearance of facial wrinkles.

Pseudo-alteromonas extract increases collagen, and regular use can visibly reduce the roughness of upper lip wrinkles induced by aging. Now, you can smile and laugh as much as you want without worrying about wrinkles around the mouth!

Summer is the perfect time to give your skin some extra love and attention. Maybe it’s time for you to try a serum. Try Petale, which will hit the shelves in July.

When applying Petale (or any other serum), you should follow the general skincare rule of applying the lightest, most watery products first, and the heaviest, oiliest products last. Following this rule, serum will usually come after your toner and before your moisturizer. Serums work best on slightly damp skin (which you’ll have after toning), and are very concentrated, so a little goes a long way.
