Ketones

If you’ve been to Essentique or read our blogs, you’d know that essential oils are a centric part of our products. Aromatherapy has many benefits in relaxation, fighting stress, and relieving mental exhaustion. But what makes essential oils so beneficial in upkeeping our health?

A big part of the reason is ketones. Ketones are chemical organic compounds that are produced in our bodies, and are essential in the creation of fuel for our bodies. They are also found in essential oils. Ketones have many properties that promote pain relief, relaxation, respiratory health, and cell regeneration. Four common ketones are camphor, menthone, carvone, and thujone.

Camphor is a ketone found in many different essential oils, such as spike lavender and rosemary essential oil. When used externally, products with camphor ketones stimulate nerve endings to relieve pain. Due to this, camphor is used in products such as Vicks Vaporub to relieve lung pain. Camphor is also a part of many over the counter cough and cold remedies. When used in aromatherapy, camphor promotes deep breathing which allows it to help relieve stress and mental exhaustion as well as respiratory pain. It is also a natural insect deterrent.

Menthone, another ketone, has similar properties. It is very effective in clearing the lungs and relieving sickness. It can also relieve nausea and headaches. It has cooling properties which help with pain. It is often found in muscle cooling relief gels and toothpastes. Menthone is also used as an energy booster – the strong, biting smell it has can help people be more alert. Menthone ketones are found in peppermint essential oils and geranium essential oils.

Another ketone, carvone, has two different types. L-carvone, found in spearmint, has a sweet, minty scent. D-carvone is found in mainly in caraway essential oils and in trace amounts in mandarin orange peel essential oils. D-carvone has a spicy scent. Both types are relaxants that help with stress and exhaustion.

Finally, thujone is a more controversial ketone. Found in sage and wormwood essential oil, thujone is toxic in high amounts. However, in slight amounts it does have benefits. It can relieve sore throats and fevers, and also works to relieve stress.

If you’re still confused about ketones: just know that they are chemical compounds with beneficial properties. Ketones in essential oil are great at fighting sickness and promoting mental wellbeing. Hopefully you learned something from this blogpost!
